Software Detects Depression in Blogs and Online Texts
Researchers from the Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Israel are developing software that can detect depression in someone through writings made in the form of blogs or other online texts.
Professor Yair Neumanis and his team claimed that the software able to recognize language that indicates the psychological state of the writer. "This software program designed to find content-laden depressive implicit in the written language," he said.
According to Neumanis, this software works like a screening device. In the demo, the computer software scans more than 300,000 English-language blogs that are posted to a site about mental health.
"Psychologists know how to know a person's emotional state through intuition. While we have a program that can also do it with an innovative method of using 'Web Intelligence'," he said.
In the experiments, the software successfully identified 100 papers that best describes the condition of depression and 100 papers which represent less depression.
The program can find words to express various emotions. For example, 'black' in combination with another term, describing the symptoms of depression. Other words that show indications of depression among 'lonely' and 'lack of sleep.
"This software can be very useful for professionals who deal with mentally ill patients," said Neuman.
